The City of Shelton is within an Urban Growth Area. As of January 1, 2001, state law permanently banned outdoor burning, including residential yard debris fires and land-clearing fires in Urban Growth Areas.

Burn barrels are illegal throughout the State of Washington.

State law prohibits the burning of the following materials, including, but not limited to: paper or newspaper (except what is necessary to start a fire), cardboard, household garbage, construction debris, including framing lumber, siding, wood shingles, deck lumber, vinyl flooring, roofing, rubber products, plastics, cardboard & paper, insulation, paints, tires and other rubber products, plastics, chemicals, petroleum products, and metal.

If complaints occur, the open burning must cease.
VIOLATIONS OF OUTDOOR BURNING LAWS MAY RESULT IN A FINE OF UP TO $10,000
